3 Reasons You Shouldn't Skip Out On Engagement Photos

We are officially in the thick of engagement season and Im sure you've already noticed it. Everyone has been posting their bling pics on instagram and changing their status to "engaged" on Facebook. The holidays are always filled with proposals and if I'm being honest, I really do love it! It's a wonderful time to get engaged as everyone is already full of holiday excitement and family is usually in town to share in the festivities.

If you are reading this, there is a good chance you are sporting a new rock on your left hand and in the midst of wedding planning yourself. Congrats! It's a super exciting (and somewhat stressful) time. There are so many blogs, magazines, and wedding experts throwing wedding tips and trends out there that it is easy to get lost in the sea of information. Pinterest can be a life saver when it comes to tablescapes, bridesmaids dresses and other decor tips, but I want to share with you something that most experts aren't really talking about. Engagement Photos.

As a wedding photographer I get the chance to speak to newly engaged couples pretty much right after it happens! I've had couples call me not even a week after saying "Yes!" eager to cross off one of the biggest to-dos on their list: Book a Wedding Photographer. I know how important photos of your wedding are. It's a once in a lifetime event and after all is said and done, photos (and your bride/groom) is pretty much all you will have left. But, Im not here to argue the importance of wedding photos, because I know, you already KNOW that. I'm here to tell you why you shouldn't skip out on the engagement photos BEFORE the wedding!

1. Getting Comfortable with Your Photographer

Your wedding photographer is going to be by your side on your wedding day more than anyone else! Think about it. When you are getting your makeup done, they're there. When you are getting into your dress, they're there. When you are privately reading a letter before the ceremony from your soon to be spouse, they're there. When it's time for intimate photos of just the two of you, during the vows, the family formals, when its time to cut the cake, throw the bouquet, and even at your very last dance of the night, they are there.

That's why it is so important to not only trust your wedding photographer as a professional, but also feel comfortable and like them. Those romantic veil shots you see involve me working my way under the veil WITH the couple, getting within inches of their faces, and then having them kiss very slowly while I click away on my camera. It has the potential to be a very awkward moment. However, engagement photos help ease the tension tremendously!

Not only will you get to know your photographer personally but you will also learn how they work. Most couples I work with always start out a little nervous, unsure of what to do with their hands or when to look at the camera and when not to. By the end of the session though, they are completely different people. They know exactly where to put their hands, they know where to look and when, and they are confident. Come wedding day, we don't have to spend 15 minutes (that we most likely won't have) getting comfortable and working on basic poses, because they already know exactly what to do! Meaning, we can jump right into romantic, fun, genuine portraits that truly represent who they are and how much they love each other.

2. Getting the Most of Your Hair/Makeup Trial

Ladies, this is for you! What's worse than wasting a good hair day? Wasting a good hair & makeup day! I always encourage brides to book their engagement session on the same day that they have their hair and makeup trial so that they get the most out of each experience. Plus, it will give you a chance to see how your hair and makeup will photograph. Sometimes, what you think will look good on you, may end up not being the style you were really going for. Having photos to look at can really help solidify your decision.

It's not everyday that you get to have your hair and makeup styled by a professional, so why not put it to good use and have some photos captured.

3. Gorgeous Photos for Save-the-Dates or Reception Decor

Having nice photos for save the dates is always a plus but not everyone sends those, so what else can your engagement photos be used for? Many of our couples use the photos for guest books or decor at their reception. This is where Pinterest takes the cake because they have so many different ideas for ways to incorporate photos at your reception. Take a look at this board here for more ideas: HERE

Even if you are having a short engagement and don't plan to use the photos for Save the dates, they are still nice to have for bridal showers and set up at the reception. Everyone loves looking at beautiful pictures of the happy couple and you can keep them after the wedding and place them all over your home as decoration!
